URGENT NOTICE REGARDING INDIAN HAWTHORNS

The long, cold winter and freezing winds have been devastating to many shrubs and plants in the Charlotte metro region, especially Indian Hawthorns. If your Indian Hawthorn is damaged by winter cold, it is possible that the plant may recover. To determine if a branch is dead, scratch away a bit of bark with your fingernail or a pruning knife. If the layer below the bark is green or a moist-looking white, it's likely the branch can recover; if it's brown and brittle, that area is dead.

 Pruning the dead areas of your plant may help it regrow slowly with time. Keeping your plant well-watered when it begins growing in spring can also help it recover from winter injury. We recommend our Ornamental Tree and Shrub Program to keep your valuable landscape plantings free from insect and disease damage this summer. Our dormant oil spray in the late fall will assist your plants in withstanding the cold next winter.

It's Trimming and Pruning Time

It's Trimming Time Time is running out... just a few weeks left. Spring buds come quickly and then it's too late for trimming and pruning.  December through February is the best time of the year to prune trees and trim shrubs. Once cold weather has set in and the plants have hardened for winter, you can safely prune, limb and trim without hurting the plant. Three things that would prevent trimming or pruning: A tree or shrub has visible flowers.  A tree or shrub has a visible buds.  A tree or shrub has brand new foliage. Cutting off the top of a crape myrtle has become a wide spread way to prune for most homeowners and is not always recommended. Most people believe that heavy chopping is necessary to promote flowers and some cut the top off because the plant is too large for the space provided.  There are some instances in which heavy pruning is necessary, but light pruning is usually all that is needed. The type and amount of pruning depends on the desired shape and size of the plant, contact us at SecureTurf with any questions.
