Water, Water and did I say Water...

Our poor landscapes need water, please don't forget to water.  Check your sprinklers and make sure they are working and please water appropriately.

Watering

1.        Water before 9:00am only.  Daylight watering or night watering will promote fungus and disease.

2.        Do not under or over water. Water correctly or do not water at all.

3.        Let soil dry 2-3 inches in depth before each watering.

4.        Water to 6 inches in depth each time. Light watering can do more damage than good whether by rainfall or by hose.

5        Do not water if there is adequate rainfall.  Six inches of depth moisture takes about 1 inch of slow rainfall, not heavy rain.  Short heavy rainfalls tend to run off.

6        Average lawns need 1" of water per week.  During the heat of the summer this interval may be shortened to every 2-3 days due to evaporation.

Spring/Summer weather is coming...  Here are some helpful reminders to get the most out of your SecureTurf lawn care services   Why do I have brown patches on my lawn?   At first glance, the browning areas in your lawn may appear to be fungus, or brown patch.  Here are a few ways to tell if it is actually drought: Locate a brown patch, and pull on the grass. If it won’t pull easily from soil and is firmly rooted, it’s likely brown due to drought. Push a screwdriver into soil in brown and green lawn areas. If the blade slips easily into green lawn and won’t penetrate brown, soil is dry. In rocky soil, dig a small hole to check soil moisture. Look at the lawn as a whole. When drought is the culprit, brown patches appear randomly and in rough patterns. Lawn near a sprinkler head may be green, while lawn further away is brown. Grassy areas in shade remain greener when parts in full sun turn brown due to drought. Lawn in low spots will remain green while higher areas turn brown. Learn early signs of drought stress. Footprints remain on grass after it’s walked on.  Grass blades may also wilt.     After evaluating many lawns we have realized that these brown areas are heat patches.  Please water these areas well.  Do not soak or suturate them, but keep them as damp as possible. The brown areas will be mowed off as the turf continues to grow.   MOWING Mowing has an effect on the appearance and health of your lawn. Fescue lawns should be mowed at a height of 3"- 4".   Bermuda and Zoysia lawns should be mowed at .75" to 1.75". Please sharpen your mower blades regularly, especially before the growing season.   WATERING Proper watering is the #1 thing you can do for your lawn. Water your lawn 1"-1.25" per week all at one time without wasting water. Do not water daily. Have you applied fertilizer to your ornamental trees and shrubs?   Winter & early spring are the best times to apply plant fertilizer.  Call our office to have your plants fertilized with a nursery-grade slow-release fertilizer.  This winter was brutal on many plants. Cold and wet conditions created unpleasant environments for plants, especially plants that like well-drained soil. Mosquito Season - Plants Mosquitoes Don't Like!

The good news is a lot of these plants you may use in your kitchen cooking.

With all the rain the Charlotte area has received recently, the mosquitoes have a lot of places to breed.  Remember to empty out any areas around the exterior of your home that has rain water sitting in it.  Any place water can collect and sit becomes a breeding ground for mosquitoes.  Empty any buckets, trash cans and other things that collect rain water this will help.

You may be experiencing an excessive amount of standing or rushing surface water to an area on or surrounding your property, that may seem to be a problem, SecureTurf has the solution.  Reclaim your land today...one of our landscape design experts will show you how. This maybe creating turf damage as well as structural damage.  Here are possible solution: Install Dry creek beds to direct the water flow to exit the property. Install underground drain system,  or  use catch basins, or maybe channel drain and pop up emitters. Install  EZ Flow French drain to remove surface water into the  subsurface water table. Regrade the existing yard to flow away from your home. URGENT NOTICE REGARDING INDIAN HAWTHORNS

The long, cold winter and freezing winds have been devastating to many shrubs and plants in the Charlotte metro region, especially Indian Hawthorns. If your Indian Hawthorn is damaged by winter cold, it is possible that the plant may recover. To determine if a branch is dead, scratch away a bit of bark with your fingernail or a pruning knife. If the layer below the bark is green or a moist-looking white, it's likely the branch can recover; if it's brown and brittle, that area is dead.

 Pruning the dead areas of your plant may help it regrow slowly with time. Keeping your plant well-watered when it begins growing in spring can also help it recover from winter injury. We recommend our Ornamental Tree and Shrub Program to keep your valuable landscape plantings free from insect and disease damage this summer. Our dormant oil spray in the late fall will assist your plants in withstanding the cold next winter.
